so i've been watching only woody allen lately on the weekends and of course i love it for its dialogue but also, for the clothes. oh the clothes. today i watched play it again, sam and diane keaton's look is incredibly relevant and modern. i especially loved her pleated maxi skirt worn under her maxi coat with the pleats peeking out of the bottom of the coat. details. (i wore a similar outfit with a tartan maxi and tweed coat i had when i was in college.) the costume designer is anna hill johnstone and i definitely want to see the others movies she's worked with just for the outfits.

i need a matching sweater and beret set.

it's hard to see but she's wearing lace up wedges with knee socks.

i have two weddings two weekends in a row in new york and was really excited for a chance to get dressed up after months and months of living in my boyfriend's chinos and layered baggy tops. the obstacle of my outfit was to hide my middle area and lengthen my short legs. my choices came down to

-1920s floral chiffon and lace dress
-philip lim crepe cocoon dress
-1930s chiffon crepe dress (with amazing buttons in back)

i opted for the philip lim dress. it hid the areas i needed to hide and showed enough of my legs to lengthen them a bit. it was worn with the chloe wedges shown with black opaque tights and a black cardigan. (with my hair up in heidi braids.) the black chiffon crepe dress i'm holding onto for now and the 1920s dress should be going in the store sometime soon. (unless i start my p90x diet and exercise regimen.)

it's been a while since i've updated. things were a bit in limbo for a while here. at one point, i was ready to move to l.a. but am now staying in fl. a relationship is a lot of work, esp. the stage where i am now - the third year. it's been pretty rocky but things seem calm for now.

i'm not moving to l.a. but we are moving into a new home. it's an exciting change and it'll be nice to no longer have to go up elevators and walk down long hallways to get to my front door. and it'll be nice to have a backyard. but i will miss have super high ceilings and friendly gay neighbors.

the place is pretty much move in ready, save for some paint that needs to go on some walls, esp. in the kitchen.

it's cute, like the rest of the house. and if you have any color suggestions for the kitchen, please let me know.

long weekend in miami

long weekend eating and drinking in miami with old and new friends that ran in the ING miami beach marathon. ate at joe's stone crab the first night and ended up throwing up the next day for about 4-5 hours. and wasted my saturday. (friend let me know her boyfriend also threw up after eating there so i DO NOT recommend.)

scarpetta at fountainebleu was a much better experience. i had the burrata to start, the duck and foie gras ravioli, and the napoleon creme brulee. (and recommend all three.) sorry for the lack of pictures, i'm so not on with taking pics of my food!

and wore my new jeffrey campbell for lf alexa wedges (acne knock offs) this weekend, as i was sans boyfriend. (when together, i wear flats because he is not super tall.) i tried to get as much wear out of them as possible because who knows when i will be without him with a chance to wear them again. they are my one major shoe purchase for the year. i haven't tried the acnes on but i can say that the platform on these are pretty level so there's no discomfort from the arch. the actual wedge in the back is a bit narrow so while walking, i felt my heel slip to the right and left a few times but that may just be my clumsiness. but if you are short like me, they def give you a major boost in height. but they also majorly look like ice skates when worn with skinny jeans. i suggest wearing them with short dresses or rolled up jeans.

i found the last pair in a size 6 at the lf miami store. but they have them available in other sizes in the miami store and in their other locations. if you are in search for a pair, you should call their different locations to see if they're in stock.

hemingway's home and key west

i'm not much for holidays but this year, i spent thanksgiving weekend in key west. i visited hemingway's home for the second time. it's not an extravagant home, though large for it's time. there are lush gardens all around the estate. there is always a breeze on his wraparound balcony because of the tall foliage surrounding the house. lazy six-toed cats slither around the estate, sleeping in the shade, hiding in corner nooks. there is something i truly love about old homes (as i do old clothes!) - they have character and idiosyncratic details that are particular to that individual home. (not like mass-made drywall mcmansions built nowadays.)

if you ever have a chance to visit, be sure to take the tour. he died tragically but you can tell he lived a full life.

i have always wanted to open a storefront. i still want to. it's a matter of where to open one. and when. and also, right now, it's great to be able to run the store from anywhere in the country without the storefront holding me down.

if i were to open a storefront, i would want it to have the feel of either geminola or venus and mars. gorgeous, lush, packed to the brim, sparkly - everything a girl wants to be around. even though i don't think everything i've collected would look great on me per se, i just like having the dresses around. some are just great to look at!

Shadows and Light

There was the wet cement floor, brown from the running water that washed our clothes and dishes, rinsed our rice and filled the basins my mother bathed me in. The center of the house was open and dark, dark because I remember the hallway leading outside feeling flooded with light in the mornings, remember that hallway as the only source of true sunlight in the house. I have no memory of windows. Walking through that hallway was stepping into light and then more light. Walking through that hallway back into the house was stepping into shadows and into our room that was lit by one dim bulb.

I can only tell you there was a ceiling because of the shadows, not because I ever looked up. I cannot describe the house beyond a certain height, beyond the top of the sliding doors that lit up in square patches of rice paper, squares shaped by perpendicular wooden panels. Around the square, cement floor, behind each sliding door, lived a different family. You could see the shape of their bodies at night through the patches, could see the wave of their blankets as they prepared their floors for sleep. Above the doors is what I imagine to be more wall, probably cement, but what I cannot recall, I remember as darkness; dirty corners and dark, dark ceilings.

What I can recall was what was closest to the ground - the soil outside the house that felt thick in my palms, moist and soft to be packed together with water to make pies and mound shapes that looked like chocolate. Our shoes were lined up neatly outside our sliding door, on the wooden floor that wrapped around the center space. The floor of our little room was cool in the summer and when my mother made me cover my body with blankets even in the heat, I snuck a leg out and laid it against the floor or against the wall. I do not remember the decision to move my leg but I clearly remember the sensation - the cool of the floor against my skin.

Of the families that lived in the house, I can only recall a mother and her two daughters that lived behind the sliding door next to us. Their faces are filled in for me through pictures I will later see but I remember them the way I remember the light in the hallway - a clear presence in contrast to the shadows. They were a source of light, the way my mother was but when I imagine our own room behind our sliding door, I only see the four bare walls and dresser, the blankets piled on top of the dresser, the fan in the corner. I remember my mother as a source of light, I remember myself through every new sensation; the cool of the floor against my skin, the richness of the soil between my fingers. What I do not remember about my life in Korea remains in shadows - my father, my brother, the roof that kept out the sun and rain, the dark corners I never lifted my head to look into.

sept 11, i was a 19 year old waitress in queens. i was working the day shift and heard about the twin towers on the radio while driving to work. i was driving east, towards long island, and all i saw was the blue sky and sunshine.

customers came in throughout the day with tales of the shut down city, about walking across the brooklyn bridge, hitching a ride on the back of a flatbed truck. although everyone sat at different tables, they were all a part of the same room-wide conversation. we gathered by the flat screen television to watch the footage of the falling towers, shown again and again on every main news channel.

later in the day, a group of darker skinned indian-looking kids walked in. there were whispers from the throng. they had darker skin and a few had their heads wrapped. there were whispers about taking the kids out to the parking lot. the planes were still flying into the tower on the television screen. i watched the planes and it no longer shocked me. what remained wasn't anger but ambivalence. i felt a bit ashamed to be an american.

i love this photograph above. she looks the way i feel most of the time inside. or the way i feel myself reflected within when i encounter others.

i recently visited home and my mother, she grabs a chunk of my arm and says i've gained weight. then she proceeds to call me the day after i leave new york to tell me to lose weight, eat earlier, etc. and she calls me again later to stop wearing loose clothing because it encourages the weight gain. i think my size is normal for most girls but for a korean girl, it may not be acceptable.

i would like to tone up and get back my high school body. but i was a tad anorexic in high school, i believe, and broke a femur bone due to my overall weakness. but it is one of the last times i felt a high from the control i had over myself, my life. i have that control in other ways now but i'd like to have it over my body. i'd like to be able to wear all those dresses stored in my closet for the 'day i lose the extra weight.."

we're flying to toulouse in november and january. he has business there and i just want to leave the u.s. i've never truly felt like an american, more like someone in between nations and allegiances. a bit like a gypsy, but more like someone lost. and the more u.s. cities i visit, the more i feel i don't have a true home.

i watched annie hall again tonight and i still love it. the new york dialogue is so spot-on and woody allen's experimental cinematic style is hilarious and way ahead of its time. the story is simple but so idiosyncratic and relatable.

and what i love most is diane keaton and her quirky menswear-inspired style. i miss living in new york because i have no occasion to dress this way in florida! it's the perfect way to dress for autumn in new york.
